Well add yet another designer to cross over into cosmetics.
Christian Louboutin has premiered his nail polish line at Sephora with a single polish. The rest are bound to show up soon enough. The timeless red shade is suppose to suit any skintone and cover in one coat. The bottle is a piece of art in itself given that it was inspired by Louboutin's Ballerine ULTIMA.
Many people think that spending $50 on a nail polish is absurd. And yeah I would have to agree with you there, but I also remember when Le Metier de Beaute came out with their mini polishes people were also crying foul over paying so much for a mini polish.
Well, LMdB has since become more affordable with regular bottles costing $18. So perhaps in the future Louboutin nail polish might go down in price as well. As for the formula, I have yet to try it out but from what I hear it is on par with the saying "You get what you pay for." One coat, brilliant shine, perfect application, etc. it seems that a lot has gone into making this bottle of polish.
While I personally won't be buying a bottle, (cosmetics that double as weapons usually means I'll hurt myself) I can see the appeal. Not only as a beauty junkie but also as a collector.
I imagine in a few years, if the bottle design changes that there will be a throng of people selling this for grips of cash on Ebay and the like. It's happened to many things before....
Also, if this venture into cosmetics does fail the items produced might become hot commodities for swapping and such. I'm still hoarding my lip balm monodoses from Prada from over 10 years ago (gross I know but I swear it's the best lip balm ever).
Final note, in regards to the price..... there are more expensive and less beautiful nail polishes out there. Don't believe me? Serge Lutens nail polish retails for $65 a bottle and it's definitely not as pretty of a bottle. Also I personally found their formula to be nothing special as well.
