Silver Shatters Compete! Sally Hansen Fractured Foil vs. OPI Silver Shatter

So I caved.....  I saw OPI Silver Shatter at my Ulta and I got it.

Cosmetic:

First off I have to say that I initially wasn't impressed with the Sally Hansen Crackle, but after playing with it a bit I find that if I do a thin coat that I get my desired effect.  So I take back what I said in my last post.

Secondly, there are a few tricks in applying a crackle topcoat.  I have three pointers that I found to be very helpful.
First:  If the coat is too thick then the polish won't crackle as much.  Try a thin layer and if you want to build up color, add another thing layer and it should crack in all the same places.

Second:  Cracks form on the thinner areas of polish.  I find that if I brush through the polish again (after the initial coat while it is still wet) that it will catch on the brush and leae little bald spots.  These then make bigger cracks.  If you want more horizontal cracks, try to brush over the polish again starting halfway up the nail to the tip right after the initial application.

Sound confusing?  Think of it as if you were applying mascara to your lashes.  The first sweep is from root to tip, the second sweep is from the middle of your lashes to the tip.  Same concept here except you don't reload the brush with polish.

Third:  These topcoats shatter best when used over a shiny polish.  If the polish you're using has a matte, suede or buffed finish then it might not crack as well.  I find it a lot more difficult to use these with my matte polishes.

If you want to use this with a matte polish, I found that they work better if you don't let the polish underneath dry completely.

I hope these tips are useful and will help you get good results.

Now onto the battle!

First category: Price! - Now OPI averages for about $8.50 at most retailers.  You can find some for less than that but that's usually the going price.  This isn't too bad since this polish is priced the same as the other polishes so you're less likely to get sticker shocked like with the DS collection.

Sally Hansen has products averaging about $5 a bottle.  Sometimes less, sometimes more.  The crackle is priced at $7 which is above the average cost of their nail polishes and it seems pretty high for me as a drug store brand.  For $1.50 more I would personally splurge on the OPI.

Second Category: Formula! - OPI's formula is in my opinion pretty close to their regular nail polishes.  It's slightly thick, but spreads evenly.  I don't notice this being any thinner or thicker.

Sally Hansen nail polish formulas run thin in my opinion, except for their Fast Dry line which is pretty thick.  This crackle polish is runny and thin and I found it was easier to apply lightly in regards to formula.

Third Category: Application! - OPI has a pro-wide brush that allows for a one stroke application on most of my nails.  Only problem with that is when I am looking to make a thin coat, I tend to have too much polish on the brush (especially on my pinkies).  But the brush makes application very easy for the other nails.

Many have complained, and I will add to it.  Why is the brush so thin?  Seriously, it's hard to get enough polish on the brush to do the bigger nails and it makes it harder to do a few thin sweeps and have the entire nail covered.  However, I had no problem doing my pinkies.  But I found the thin brush to be frustrating in the beginning.  Once you play with it, the application becomes better but they really need a wider brush.

Fourth Category: Packaging! - OPI has standard packaging for the Silver Shatter.  There might be a tag attached to the neck of the bottle but overall it's the same as regular OPI bottle.

Sally Hansen has a thin rectangular bottle with a concave curved handle that tapers towards the bottle.  It's a very pretty bottle and easy to fit into slim places.  I like this look very much and I love how Sally Hansen distinguishes the different lines with different bottles.

Fifth Category: Color! - Now what would be the point to all of this if I didn't note color?  OPI Silver Shatter is a darker silver, and gives off a more oxidized/pewter color in comparison.

Sally Hansen Crackle is a brighter, lighter silver that looks more white gold/platinum.  If you're wondering whether or not you really need two silvers, you do!  These are different silvers indeed.
Overall:  If you're looking for a reliable darker silver color that doesn't have too thin of a consistancy and has an easy to apply wider brush, then I would go for OPI Silver Shatter.

If you want a lighter flashier silver color with a thin formula and prefer a thinner brush then go for the Fractured Foil.

Now for comparison pictures.
These are the two bottles together, you can see the difference in color.

Now here I have them layered over a dark blue.  The two swatches on the left are OPI and the swatch on the far right is Sally Hansen.

And here you can see the difference on my nail.  The index finger has Fractured Foil on and the middle finger has Silver Shatter.

So here are my OPI ratings:

Value : 3 - I think all OPI polishes are too expensive, even if it's a salon brand.  So the price is only average to me....

Ease of Use : 5 - This polish was so easy to use and I got great results.  I'm very happy with this polish.
Quality : 4 - I only give a 4 because OPI is not my favorite formula out there.  I actually love China Glaze's formula much more.  But this isn't bad mind you, just not the best for me.  If you like OPI's formula then you'll like this polish.

Overall : 4 - I'm very glad I got this polish, albeit I'm genetically a cheapo and would have preferred it to not cost so much.  Can you imagine how many pork buns I could have bought for $8.50?  But what can you do?  I do like that the color is darker since I feel it's more appropriate with the Pirates of the Caribbean theme and it's not super flashy so I won't feel so bad when I wear it to work.

And my Sally Hansen ratings:

Value : 2.5 - Again, I'm a cheapo.  I just feel that $7 is too much for me to be paying for a drugstore brand crackle polish.  I don't mind paying higher for their complete manicure line since it's all the steps in one bottle.  Even the nail strips I can buy at around $10 without wincing because of it's ease and the compliments I get.  But $7 for a topcoat is too much in my book.  You can disagree with me but I don't intend on getting any other colors unless they're on sale.

Ease of Use : 3 - It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it, but you have to first get the hang of it.  I really think they should have put a thicker brush on these like they did with the Fast Dry polish.  The key to this polish working is to apply it quickly, and the brush doesn't let you do that.

Quality : 4 - I like Sally Hansen polishes a lot and for a drugstore brand their quality is good.  The formula for this polish is thinner and the color seems less pigmented when compared to the OPI, but I basically got the same results with both polishes so as far as quality is concered, it's up to par.

Overall : 3.2 - I like this product but I will not buy it again at this price.  Very similar to how I like tacos from taco trucks but will not pay over a dollar for them.  I just don't think they are worth that much.  And although I do like both this polish and tacos, my bugdet won't allow me to overpay.

Confection:

And now for a Friday treat!
I hope everyone is planning to have a great long weekend!  I'm working, which sucks, but at least it's not all day long.  So I celebrated the coming of the weekend with a treat that is either so right or so very wrong.  You decide.....

bacon peanut brittle

Yes, the whole world has gone to bacon.  I have yet to perfect my bacon brittle recipe and with each attempt I bring myself closer to a heart attack.  I have to say though, this is pretty good.  My one complaint is that there is too much bacon.  I know I'm crazy right?

Anyways, have a safe weekend and watch out for zombies.

Update Pinky Paradise Order Review : Geo Bella Grey BS-205 Lenses

So this past weekend was exhausting so say the least.  With prom and graduation falling on the same weekend, the economy must have had itself some stimulation.....

So in my last post I revealed / reviewed my order from Pinky Paradise.  I didn't take in eye photos of the Bella Grey lenses since they were for my friend.
But I did get a picture of her wearing them....  I want to apologize now for the crappy photo since I took it with my phone camera.

I enlarged it so that you could see the detail a little better.

The color looks great!  It's a darker grey color and it blends in pretty well with the original eye color.  She wore these all day on her graduation with no problem but found that they were getting dry with prolong wear (as do almost all contacts).

Enlargement was noticeable but not creepy big.  For those wondering how accurate the manufacturer photos are for this lens, it's pretty close.  This is a darker grey not a lighter grey and it leaves a lot of the original iris showing but it blends into the color.
The outer limbal ring isn't very thick and the resulting look is very natural.

I'm now thinking I need a pair for myself.  Sigh.....

Pinky Paradise Reveal/ Review (revisited)

Okay let's try this again.  I'm much calmer now and I'm hankering to write about these lenses (even if this is my second time doing so....grr...).
So to recap, I purchased from Pinky Paradise last Friday and chose express shipping.  They arrived Wednesday morning via Fed Ex (5 days later or 3 business days later).  I ordered before using standard shipping and the lenses arrived in the alotted time frame (2 weeks or 10 business days).  I'm super happy at how fast they came and this entry will be more of a reveal than a review.  I will give my opinions on the lenses I got for myself, but I will forgo my rating system.

I used the promo code frmheadtotoe and got a free gift and a free lens case with EACH pair of lenses I ordered.  This makes it super convenient for me since I wear daily disposables and don't have lens cases on hand.  Plus these are so cute!
So on the reveal shall we?

This is what was waiting for me when I got home.
Yay express shipping!
Ah how complex does the envelope in an envelope packaging feel when you want to get to the goodies as soon as possible?
bag in the bag
Here are my free gifts.
So Cute!
And here is the Rohto Lycee I got for my friend.  I use the Rohto Ice and if you think the Lycee is all you can handle then stay away from the Ice.  It's super minty and not fun for the first few seconds after applying.
Pink eye drops
So these are the lenses.  I got five pairs in total with one pair meant as a gift for a friend.  These would be the Bella Greys and I won't be reviewing how this looks in the eye.

From left to right we have: EOS Pop C Dark Violet, EOS Candy Pink, EOS Candy Green, Geo Bella Grey and Barbie King Size Circle Grey (BKSCG).

Here are the lenses in the vial

My thoughts on Bella Grey is that it's a really subtle lens.  The grey color is lighter than I expected in the vial but it's also not as color dense like with the Candy Pink.  I think because of this the color will easily blend more into the natural eye color.  The black ring also has a nice fade to it so I'm hoping this looks super natural but still noticeable.  But I will see how it looks on my friend when she wears it and hopefully have a pic or two for you all to see.

Now for action shots, forgive me it was late.  This is how these look in my eye.

The Candy Pink lens is by far the most flamboyant of the bunch.  It looks really awesome but only wear these if you're looking to get noticed.  The Candy Green is much more subdued than the Candy Pink, but the thick outer ring still makes for a dramatic eye.
The Pop C Dark Violets are the most subtle of the bunch.  I love the Pop C Dark Blue ones I have.  I have to say I think the Dark Violets look more natural on me.  From afar it looks like I have brownish eyes.  It's only when you come closer that you notice it's purple.  This is making me want to get all the Pop C colors.

As far as comfort for the EOS lenses, I find them to  be super comfy.  I have moderate to severe eye allergies and because of that I am not able to wear regular contacts and must by disposables.  I usually reserve my circle lenses for the weekends and I go out for very long periods at a time on the weekends.  I find that they are very comfortable from day to night.  I only have problems if my allergies are acting up in which case I wear my daily disposables or glasses.  But I have had EOS brand circle lenses for a few months now and I've had very few issues.

As for the BKSCG lenses..... these were the biggest disappointment of the bunch.  Other than for the enlargement and the black ring, they look and feel like colored contacts I can get from my optometrist.  Now don't get me wrong, I do like the lenses and will get good wear out of them, I was just expecting more.

As for comfort level, these are only okay.  I wore them out today at work and while they didn't irritate me, one of the lenses refused to stay put and as a result, I looked cock-eyed for most of the day and I kept getting blurred areas of vision.  I instinctually figured this as gunk in my eye and rubbed my eye.  After rubbing, my eyes started to turn red and my allergy kicked in (so sensitive I know).  By the time I got home I couldn't wait to take the lenses off.

I don't think I'll be getting these lenses again.

As for the rest of the order?  I love it all!  I'm so happy with Pinky Paradise.

Now then!  Everyone go to Pinkyparadise.com and start buying lenses!

Thank you and have a great weekend!

Crackle-mania: China Glaze vs. LaRosa Plus Hard Candy Lash Ink Review (Revisited)

So this is my attempt at rewriting the content of my crackle comparison entry that was cut short for unknown reasons to me.

I won't be rating the polishes again because I forgot what I wrote to be honest.  But I did favor the La Rosa polishes more than the China Glaze because of the color range and the thinner consistency that allows me to work with it more.

Also, my review on Hard Candy Lash Ink was not so positive.  I don't remember what I wrote for my ratings but I do remember that the overall rating was 1.75, not good at all.

So without further to do, on with the review!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As much as I don’t want to admit it, crackle polishes are quite on trend and will be for at least through summer.  I have given in and bought a few colors in hopes that I can use them whenever occasion calls for an unorthodox manicure.  There are many brands out there but the main ones I’ve been hearing about are from OPI and China Glaze.  I will be reviewing China Glaze crackles and La Rosa crackle/ shatter which I never heard of until a couple of days ago.

Just a note, I get the bulk of my nail polishes and supplies from U.S. Nail Supply in San Jose.  This allows me to feed my addiction for a lot less than I would normally pay.  All polishes were purchased here.

Cosmetic

China Glaze:

When these came in stock I was super excited since it seemed impossible at the time to get my hands on OPI Black Shatter and I’m not a fan of Katy Perry, so much so that anything associated with her I will avoid.  I got 4 colors: Black Mesh, Fault Line, Lightening Bolt and Broken Hearted.  The formula is no thinner or thicker than the normal China Glaze colors and the dry time is really fast.  My problem with using these is that it dries too quickly and an even crackle effect was hard for me to achieve.  I was getting a bulk of vertical lines and very few horizontal breaks.

Fault Line was the worse one in terms of crackle-effect.  It would split but it indeed looked more like a fault line than a shatter.  I was able to remedy the lack of crackle-effect/ shatter by “nicking” the polish on my nail after I applied it with the tip of the polish brush.  This would leave holes or thin spots in the application and help facilitate shrinkage of the polish.

The colors are bold and pretty well pigmented.  My only wish is that it wouldn’t dry so super fast and would crackle more.

La Rosa:

I got these the other day and swatched them on my nails when I got home to see how well they worked.  Maybe it’s the higher temperatures in my area, but these are awesome in terms of crackle.  I got 3 colors: Hot Yellow, Lincoln Park After Dark and Hot Purple.  Being disappointed with Fault Line, I was hoping this would work better.  Also I’m not sure if there’s some copyright going on with naming a shade Lincoln Park After Dark, but I guess we’ll let OPI and La Rosa deal with that issue.

These apply like a dream but are watery.  They also do not dry as fast as China Glaze (I’m guessing because it more watery of a formula).  When the polish dries, the crackle effect is more pronounced but the pigments in the polish can look dried out in some parts of the nail.  Another note is that the color on the Hot Yellow fades into darker colors and looked less pigmented in real life.  It looks great when photographed but in real life it’s kinda blah, like you have dried curry on your nails.  I suppose adding an opaque white would remedy this, but just a warning,  if you want the color to really pop then wear it over a light base color.  Note I got the smaller shatter pieces by layering 2 thin coats.

On another note, I went to Wal-Mart and bought this on a whim.  I’ve seen it a couple of times but just decided to buy in order to satisfy my curiosity bug.

Hard Candy Lash Ink:

On the package it says it’s suppose to last up to 4 days.  I think that is both cool and disgusting.  But I’m all for long wearing cosmetics so hey why not?  The formula is inky and looks like liquid eyeliner.  The brush that comes with it has a short bristle length and the bristle rows are spaced far apart (like what I expect with most thickening mascaras).  These types of brushes don’t bode well for my skimpy lashes.  I tried to brush on the formula and got blobs of color on my lashes and all over my eye.

I switched to a lash brush (MAC # 205) and while I was able to get the mascara on, it dried too quickly that I got clumps.  Once I combed these out, I had nice natural looking lashes.  Pretty and cute but way too much effort.

By the next morning it looked as if I had no mascara on.  WTF?  While there were traces of mascara on my lashes, the result looked barely noticeable.  While the formula didn’t smudge, it didn’t last me through a shower and a face washing in which I took care not to disturb my lashes.  Another bad side effect is that my eyes seemed allergic to something in the mascara.  I’m not 100% sure of this since Hard Candy doesn’t provide any safety seal or shrink wrap for this product so I don’t know if anyone else messed with it.

But for the 4 days I tried this mascara out, my eyes were itchy and red.  I also noticed one morning that it looked like there was a black string on the inside of my lower eyelid.  When I tried to get it out I realized that it was mascara stuck in the epithelial tissue of my inner eyelid.  GROSS!  I had a red eye for most of the day waiting for the cells to shed and with it, release this irritating mass of pigment that seemed tattooed on my inner eyelid.  By the end of the day I had a weird black eye booger and that’s when I stopped.  And that’s how I’m rating this mascara.

As far as smudge-proof mascara this is good.  But if you want long-wearing, easy to apply mascara for sensitive eyes then I suggest getting Blinc mascara.

Confection
I had some talk here about me being a quasi-hipster that somehow led to ice cream.  I really don't know what that was all about but I do remember the ice cream.

Humphry Slocombe Secret Breakfast

Go on, have a bite!
This ice cream is awesome!  It's a mix of ice cream, candied corn flakes and a good splash of bourbon.  The candied cornflakes ensure that the crunch remains intact.  The bourbon is the best secret ever.

The ice cream though tends to butter up.  As in when you dig your spoon in the container enough times, a greasy saturated layer forms over the spoon.  I don't know if this is due to the alcohol or just the high fat content, but it's something to be aware of.

If you're ever in the neighborhood then stop by.  A scoop will turn into a pint that will turn into 4 pints.  There's usually a line out front but if you go in the morning or in the evening before they close there's usually no wait.
